The Women of MHOS
Spending a year and a half at Marie’s House of Serenity was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences I’ve ever had, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity.
When I first arrived at Marie’s House, I was uncertain, fearful, and struggling to find my way. The idea of sobriety felt daunting, and I wasn’t sure if I had the strength to navigate the journey ahead. But from the very first day, the environment at Marie’s House offered me something I hadn’t felt in a long time- hope. Being surrounded by people who truly understood what I was going through, I slowly began to trust the process, and more importantly, myself.
The structure and support provided at Marie’s House was exactly what I needed. The daily routine, group meetings, and one-on-one sessions with the counselors helped me rebuild my life from the ground up. I learned the importance of discipline and accountability. Not just to others, but to myself. This wasn’t just about staying sober, it was about developing a new way of living. One that prioritized my well-being and long-term recovery.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the power of connection. Being part of a community where everyone was working toward a common goal made a huge difference. The friendships I made, the shared experiences, and the mutual support were essential in helping me realize that I wasn’t alone in this fight. These connections taught me empathy, patience, and the importance of being there for others, just as they were there for me.
Marie’s House also gave me the tools to address the underlying issues that contributed to my addiction. Through therapy and self-reflection, I gained a deeper understanding of my triggers, learned healthy coping mechanisms, and started to rebuild my self-esteem. Mary, the board director, was patient, compassionate, and wise. Guiding me through the most difficult moments with care and understanding.
As I look back on my time at Marie’s House of Serenity, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. The experience has profoundly impacted my recovery and has set the foundation for a healthier, more fulfilling life. I now approach each day with a sense of purpose and confidence that I didn’t have before. I’ve learned to embrace the journey of recovery, understanding that it’s not just about staying sober, but about living a life of meaning and connection.
In closing, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone at MHOS, and mostly Mary. The lessons I’ve learned, the growth I’ve experienced, and the support I’ve received have all been invaluable to my recovery. I will carry these lessons with me as I continue to move forward, knowing that I am stronger, wiser, and more resilient because of my time there.
